Brainstem Gliomas

چکیده
Diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG) is the most common type representing approximate‐ ly 80% of brainstem gliomas [5, 6]. They have a dismal prognosis with a median survival of only a year. Their natural history is often compared to but worse than that of supratentorial glioblastoma seen primarily in the adult population. Nondiffuse brainstem gliomas, includ‐ ing focal, dorsal exophytic and cervicomedullary gliomas, are encountered less often and have a better prognosis. However, if untreated, they could also lead to progressive brain‐ stem dysfunction and ultimately death.

Pediatric brainstem tumors. Classifications, investigations, and growth patterns.
Brainstem gliomas occur in 10-20% of brain tumors in pediatrics. Over the past 3 decades, the treatment of brainstem gliomas has significantly progressed as a result of the gradual advancements in microsurgical techniques, sophisticated imaging technology and, most importantly, the availability of MRI. In this article, we review the current literature on brainstem gliomas and cover diagnosis, i...
متن کاملBrainstem gliomas--retrospective analysis of 86 patients.
Brainstem gliomas constitute 10% of brain tumors in children and less than 2% in adults. Since therapeutic options are limited and brainstem gliomas are associated with a high morbidity and mortality, we sought to analyze the prognostic factors associated with a better outcome. We reviewed the records of 86 patients with brainstem gliomas treated between 1996 and 2006. We recorded demographic a...
متن کاملPhase I trial of imatinib in children with newly diagnosed brainstem and recurrent malignant gliomas: a Pediatric Brain Tumor Consortium report.
This study estimated the maximum tolerated dose (MTD) of imatinib with irradiation in children with newly diagnosed brainstem gliomas, and those with recurrent malignant intracranial gliomas, stratified according to use of enzyme-inducing anticonvulsant drugs (EIACDs). In the brainstem glioma stratum, imatinib was initially administered twice daily during irradiation, but because of possible as...
متن کاملRadiation therapy in paediatric gliomas: our institutional experience.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The aim of our retrospective study was to analyze the clinical outcome of paediatric glioma patients treated with radiation therapy (RT) in our institution. MATERIAL AND METHODS We retrieved the case records of all children with gliomas (age < 18 years) who received RT in our department between 2004 and 2007. We analyzed the information regarding patients' demography, c...
متن کاملTargeting rat brainstem glioma using human neural stem cells and human mesenchymal stem cells.
PURPOSE Brainstem gliomas are usually inoperable and have a dismal prognosis. Based on the robust tropisms of neural stem cells (NSC) and mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) to brain tumors, we compared the tumor-tropic migratory capacities of these stem cells and evaluated the therapeutic potential of genetically engineered human NSCs encoding cytosine deaminase (CD) and IFNbeta against brainstem gli...
